E-commerce moved stores onto the internet, but it did not fundamentally change the way software expected people to interact with those stores. Customers still had to search, click, filter, compare, add to cart and move through predefined checkout steps. AI commerce introduces a different possibility: instead of forcing the customer to understand the structure of the store, the system can begin by understanding the intention of the customer.
AI commerce is the use of artificial intelligence across buying, selling and the systems that support those activities. It can include conversational shopping, intelligent product recommendations, automated customer service, inventory management, payment assistance, sales analysis, business automation and AI agents capable of completing commercial tasks through connected tools.
The important distinction is that AI should not simply exist somewhere inside the product. Intelligence needs to change the experience. A recommendation algorithm suggesting another pair of shoes is useful, but AI commerce can go much further. A customer could say, “I need a black shoe for an event this weekend, I wear size 43 and I do not want to spend more than 30,000 CFA,” and allow the system to work from the request rather than making them navigate through every category manually.
The same transformation can happen on the merchant side. A seller should not always need to open separate screens for sales, inventory, customers and payments before understanding what is happening in their business. They could ask, “Which products are running low?” or “Who asked about this item but never completed an order?” and allow the AI layer to find the relevant information across the systems underneath.
This becomes especially interesting in African markets because a large amount of commerce is already conversational. Customers ask questions on WhatsApp before buying, sellers make recommendations, payment often happens through mobile money and transactions frequently move between conversation and commerce without ever touching a traditional shopping cart. AI fits naturally into that environment because the interface already resembles a dialogue.
This is part of the thinking behind TRIBE. We are building around the idea that intelligence should not sit beside commerce as a novelty. It should increasingly connect the customer, the merchant, the payment, the order and the operational systems behind the transaction.
AI commerce therefore is not about making shopping look futuristic. It is about reducing the distance between intention and execution. The customer says what they need. The business says what it wants done. The system coordinates more of the complexity underneath.
Traditional e-commerce gave us digital shelves. AI commerce begins to give those shelves something closer to understanding.
