TRIBE did not begin because we thought Africa needed another fintech application. If anything, the opposite was true. The more time we spent around people selling online, receiving payments, running small businesses, and trying to manage customers, the more obvious it became that the problem was not a shortage of tools.

The problem was that the tools did not work together.

A business owner can market on Instagram, receive enquiries on WhatsApp, collect payment through mobile money, write orders in a notebook, track stock somewhere else, and still depend on memory to remember which customer needs a follow-up. Every individual tool may work, but the person running the business is forced to become the bridge connecting all of them.

When the business is small, this may feel manageable. As the business grows, it becomes expensive.

Messages get buried. Customers disappear. Orders are forgotten. Stock becomes harder to track. Someone owes money and nobody remembers until weeks later. The owner is working constantly, but too much of that effort is spent moving information from one place to another instead of actually growing the business.

That problem stayed with us.

There is a common assumption that Africa is waiting to become digital, but much of the behavior is already digital. People sell through WhatsApp, market through Facebook and Instagram, collect money through mobile money, communicate with suppliers online, and run businesses almost entirely from their phones.

The opportunity is not simply to digitize these people. It is to build better infrastructure underneath what they are already doing.

That thinking became one of the foundations of TRIBE.

If a seller already speaks to customers through WhatsApp, perhaps the answer is not always forcing them to abandon that behavior and build a complicated online store. If most payments already happen through mobile money, perhaps the system should work naturally with that reality. If someone has never used business software before, perhaps the first interface should not be a dashboard filled with twenty different menus.

Sometimes innovation does not mean changing behavior. Sometimes it means removing friction around behavior that already works.

This is why TRIBE is being built across commerce, payments, business operations, and artificial intelligence.

A payment is rarely an isolated event. Something happens before it and something happens after it. Someone discovers a product, asks a question, places an order, agrees on a price, pays, receives something, and may return later. Traditional fintech often focuses on the moment where money moves. E-commerce focuses on the storefront. CRM software focuses on customers. Messaging apps focus on communication.

The human being connects the entire journey manually.

TRIBE is our attempt to become the connective tissue between those parts.

This is also where Tia becomes important. We do not see artificial intelligence simply as a chatbot that answers questions. The more interesting opportunity is when AI can understand context and help complete actions. Asking, “Who owes me money?” is useful. Being able to identify those customers, prepare reminders, and help follow up with them is more powerful.

That is where AI becomes infrastructure.

We believe small businesses deserve access to the kind of leverage that larger companies already have. A seller who cannot afford a large team should still be able to automate follow-ups. A shop owner should still be able to understand what is selling. A young entrepreneur operating through WhatsApp should still be able to manage inventory, issue receipts, collect payments, and keep track of customers professionally.

Technology should reduce the disadvantage of being small.

TRIBE exists because we believe commerce can be simpler than it currently is. We believe payments, customers, orders, business operations, and artificial intelligence should not live in completely separate worlds. We believe software should adapt more naturally to the way people already communicate and do business.

Most importantly, we believe the future should not require people to become more like software.

Software should become better at understanding people.

That is why we built TRIBE.
