What Is Conversational Commerce?

Conversational commerce sounds like a new technology term, but the behavior behind it is ancient. Commerce has always involved conversation. A customer explains what they need, asks questions, receives recommendations, negotiates where appropriate and eventually decides whether to buy. Digital commerce simply spent many years removing that interaction in favor of menus, product pages and checkout forms.

Conversational commerce brings the conversation back into the buying experience. It refers to buying and selling through interfaces where the customer can communicate naturally with a business, whether through WhatsApp, website chat, social messaging, voice assistants or AI agents.

The important difference is that the conversation is not merely customer support sitting beside the transaction. It becomes part of the transaction itself. Someone can ask whether a product is available, get a recommendation, place an order, receive payment instructions and continue receiving updates through the same interaction.

This model is already extremely familiar in African markets. Many customers do not begin a purchase by visiting a website. They see something on social media, reply to a WhatsApp status or send a direct message. The transaction grows from the conversation. What has been missing is the infrastructure to make those conversations easier for businesses to manage at scale.

Artificial intelligence changes that because software can now understand more natural language instead of depending entirely on predefined buttons. A customer can say, “I need something like this but in black,” and the system can potentially understand what they mean. A business owner can ask what orders are still pending without knowing which menu contains the answer.

When this intelligence connects to inventory, payments, customer records and order management, the conversation becomes significantly more powerful. The system can move beyond answering questions and begin coordinating the commercial journey.

This is one of the ideas behind TRIBE and Tia. We think commerce interfaces can become more natural when users are allowed to start with their intention instead of the structure of the software.

Conversational commerce does not mean websites disappear or every transaction becomes a chat. Different buying experiences will continue to make sense for different situations. The change is that conversation becomes a serious interface for commerce rather than an informal layer sitting outside the “real” system.

For years, digital commerce asked people to learn how the store was organized.

Conversational commerce asks a different question: what if the store could simply understand what the customer wanted?
